Powan ~ Coregonus lavaretus AKA Gwyniad
DESCRIPTION:
To 20cm (8ins) A rare herring like fish. Not a good sporting
fish. An average fish will be between 10cm and 15cm (4ins to
6ins) A big Powan is around the 20cm (8ins) mark.
DISTRIBUTION: The Powan
is only surviving in a couple of locations in the UK - 1 lake in
wales - 1 lake in England and a possible population in a lake in
Scotland.
HABITS: Powan are
shoaling fish.
DIET: The natural diet includes
anything small and edible that moves - insects, larvae and plankton.
BAITS: Popular baits include: Pinkies and
joker.
METHOD: A variety of fishing
methods are popular with anglers for this fish, including float and
ledger.
GOOD LOCATIONS: None really!
